Tough Little Boys
“We do not remember days, we remember moments.”
My daughter, my love, my life. For two years I have been meaning to write a blog that documented a little of that day where your mother and I said our vows to each other. Much of that day, and the days leading up to, and after it, are a blur. However, there are moments within those days that I often reminisce about and hold dearly in my heart. As the saying goes, “Life is not measured by the breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.” When I first held you was one of those moments. When I read my vows and said “I do”, is another. As you grow up, you will likely have questions about our wedding day, which I am sure you will ask your mother and I about. We will certainly be happy to re-live them with you.
This entry is a simple dedication to one particular moment from our wedding night that I wanted to get on record. Weeks leading up to our wedding, your mother and I thought it would be neat if I learnt how to play “Tough Little Boys”, for her and her father’s first dance. It is one of your grandpa’s favorite songs, which shortly after, became one of mine. I played and sang, while your grandpa and mother danced. It truly was a special moment for me, as I hope it was for them. I thought that you may enjoy to hear it someday, so I made the video above which overlays a recording of me singing it, with the help of my my guitar teacher Ralph Pretz, who plays along with the mandolin. If nothing else, at least you will always have a recording of your father doing the things he loves to do. Since you have come into my life, I now find myself wondering if one day I will have to dance with you at your wedding? The thought of this terrifies me. The song is very appropriate for fathers and has certainly taken on greater meaning for me now that I have you. When tough little boys turn in to be Dads, they turn into big babies again. I always have been a softy who camouflages it with a hard exterior, but since you have come along, I have become a pile of mush. But that is for another time……..
Beautifully captured precious moments! Well done!
